Technically, this is a "gros-de-Tours" moiré. Moiré is an ancient technique, invented in Italy. Examples of moiré fabrics are depicted in many paintings by Renaissance artists. They often serve as backgrounds for the Madonnas of Giovanni Bellini and Carlo Crivelli. Moiré is obtained through a specific mechanical process, entirely handcrafted. Specifically, two layers of fabric, coupled by putting them against each other, are passed through metal cylinders. Calendering - that is, pressing the fabric with cylinders that flatten some of the fabric's weaves, leaving others intact - creates the typical wavy effect: a pattern that is always new, never predictable and for this reason, in its own way, magical. A curiosity: in Venice, moiré fabric - called amuèr - was applied to walls to enrich the interiors of palaces. Forget-Me-Not is a Trevira CS fabric (therefore flame-retardant), with an elegant and silky appearance. It is suitable for decoration and can be paper backed.
